    Chad African Economic Outlook 2015

    Economic growth in Chad stood at 7.2% in 2014, according to estimates, and could reach 9% in 2015 due to the start of production at new oil fields. However, the current adverse conditions in the international oil market could squeeze oil revenue, which would mainly affect the non-oil sector due to falling public investment and shrinking domestic demand.

    Decline of the nomadic population

    In Chad, official records document only about 350 000 nomads remaining, out of a total population of 13 million in 2013. In Mauritania, nomads accounted for approximately two-thirds of the population at the time of independence in 1960, one-third in 1977, and less than 6% in 2000. In Mali, the figures amounted to 6% at independence in 1960 (310 000 individuals) and 1% as of the last census in 2009.
